Midnight Shopping in Adelaide

Here’s an interesting event during this x’mas and new year festive season in Adelaide – Midnight shopping. The shops in most shopping complexes open its doors for businesses at 12 midnight until the next day. For a city like Adelaide (and other Australian cities) that have limitted business hours, where most of them only operates from 9am to 6pm and 9am to 9pm on Thursday/Friday, having the streets filled with shoppers in the middle of the night is definately a surprise for me.

I guess the biggest motivation that got most shoppers up from their bed was the huge discounts of 50% that most retailers offer, from David Jones, Harris Scarfe, Myer to all the other participating boutiques. Apparently this “shopping tradition” has been going on for quite a long time… A unique tradition nonetheless. I pity the staffs working with their sleepy eyes and you could actually see black rings around some of their eyes already (just like a panda), so are some of the shoppers that have stayed way past their bed time.

I’ve composed a picture that could capture the clock in front of Borders (top left corner) and the “2 balls” sculpture (right) in the middle of Rundle Mall with shoppers on street. So, here’s a picture of Rundle Mall bustling with shoppers at 3:20AM!!
